SAMPLING OF FOOD AND DRUGS
A total of 86 samples of a wide variety of food and drugs were
purchased from shops and submitted to Dr. J. H. Hamence, F.R.I.C.,
the Council's Public Analyst, for examination.
Five were found to be unsatisfactory, namely;
Pork sausages:
These contained Sulphur Dioxide, a preservative. The retailer
failed to exhibit the statutory notice informing purchasers that
preservatives were being used.
The butcher was warned of the contravention and has since
exhibited a notice.
Minced beef;
This was found to contain a small amount of added nicotinic acid
for the purpose of keeping the meat a bright red colour, so masking
possible deterioration. The butcher was warned that the Council took
a serious view of this and was requested to cease using the substance.
Milk:
Glasses of milk were purchased in a cafe and the milk was found
to contain 27% of added water. Legal proceedings were taken resulting
in a fine of £5. 0s„ 0d. and Advocate's Fee of £3. 3s. 0d.
Mixed dried vegetables:
These were found to be wrongly described on the label. The
manufacturers were informed and corrected the labels.
Tinned raspberries:
These were found to contain insufficient fruit. The manufacturers
were informed and subsequent samples were satisfactory.
