Tuberculosis
It is gratifying to be able to report a marked reduction in
the number of new cases of pulmonary tuberculosis, only seven
being notified. This is the lowest number recorded since 1920
and it continues the downward trend in this disease since the war,
as the following table shows:-
Year: 1946 1947 1948 1949 1950 1951 1952 1953 1954
Cases: 45 46 42 34 36 44 30 39 30
Year: 1955 1956 1957 1958 1959 1960 1961 1962 1963
Cases: 20 20 32 17 21 14 13 14 7
In the school health service B.C.G. vaccination was offered
to all children in their fourteenth year and, as a result of this,
334 children were vaccinated.
The Wal thamstow and Chingford Association of Tuberculosis
Care Helpers provided financial assistance and assistance in kind
to patients and their families who suffered financial loss through
the need for prolonged treatment at home or in hospital. This
help has, in recent years, been extended to chest and heart cases
in addition to sufferers from tuberculosis. The contribution of
£50 which the Chingford Borough Council makes annually to this
Association is very much appreciated.
Dysentery
There were 24 cases notified. The annual prevalence of this
condition indicates, as I have stressed in several previous reports,
that a serious lack of personal hygiene exists in these instances,
more especially a failure to wash the hands after each visit to the
toilet or before preparing and eating food. This condition, which
is very infectious, can be controlled by the simple procedure I have
indicated.
