Shops Act 1950.
The Department administer s the whole of the provisions
of this Act which relate to closing hours of shops, conditions of
employment and Sunday trading. The Act requires, subject to some
specified exemptions, every shop to be closed not later than one
o'clock in the afternoon on one day in every week. The Local
Authority may by Order fix the day on which a shop is to be closed
or give exemption in certain cases. The following Orders have
been made:-
The County of Essex (Shops Exemption) No.2 Order 1912
This Order applies to all shops in which the trade or
business of dealers in golf requisites, booksellers, dealers in fancy
goods and stationers are carried on.
The shops to which this Order applies are exempted
from the provisions of the Act relating to closing for the weekly
half-holiday,
Chingford Weekly Half-Holiday 1915.
This Order applies to all shops in which the retail
trades or business of barbers, grocers and provision merchants are
carried on.
All shops to which this Order applies shall be closed
for the weekly half-holiday on Thursday at 1 p.m. throughout the
year, provided that any shopkeeper may substitute Saturday for
Thursday by fixing a notice to that effect in his shop.
The Chingford Extension of Weekly Half-Holiday
(No.1) Order 1924.
This Order applies to the retail trade or business of
a butcher or pork butcher and requires that the shop shall be closed
for the weekly half holiday at 1 p.m. on Thursday throughout the year,
provided that any shopkeeper may substitute Saturday for Thursday
by fixing a notice to that effect in his shop.
The Chingford Tobacconists Hours of Closing Order 1929.
The following hours are substituted for the general
closing hours in respect of the trade or business of selling tobacco
and smokers requisites, namely 10p.m. on Saturdays, 9.30 p.m. on
other days.
