SANITARY INSPECTION OF THE AREA.
During the twelve month period under review 860 complaints
were received (see summary Appendix A, page 45 ). 11,306 visits and
inspections were made (see summary, Appendix B. page 46 ) and it is estimate
that 1,700 persons were interviewed at the office,
A considerable amount of repair work and many improvements
were carried out following informal requests but formal action had to
be taken under various enactments as follows:-
Public Health Act 1936.
Section 23 (Duty to maintain public sewers)
(Emergency and routine clearing of defective and blocked sewers
is carried out under the provisions of this section,) During the
year 467 works were carried out by the staff of the Department,
Section 24 (Power of local authority to require maintenance
of certain lengths of public sewer.)
It was necessary to serve 32 statutory notices on property
owners requiring repair of sewers.
Section 37 and 6l (New buildings to be provided with necessary
drains and byelaws as to buildings and sanitation.
The Borough Engineer and Surveyor forwarded copies of all
building plans which showed new drainage serving factories, shops,
petroleum stations, food and similar premises. These plans were
examined to ensure that the various enactments were complied with.
Section 39 (Provisions as to drainage of existing buildings,)
It was necessary to serve 10 statutory notices in respect of
defects to existing drainage systems.
Sections 44 and 45 (insufficient and defective water closets.)
Three statutory notices were served.
