Acute Poliomyelitis
There was only one notification during 1962. This was in a
child of 6 years and the condition was of the paralytic type.
I am pleased to report that he has made an excellent recovery
from his illness.
The following statistics indicate the number of persons
who received immunisation against polionyelitis during 1962:-
No. receiving the two primary injections - 534
No. receiving the third injection - 1341
No. receiving fourth injection (special - 771
category, children between 5 & 12 years)
No. receiving 3 doses oral (from 30.6.62) - 352
Tuberculosis
Fresh cases of pulmonary tuberculosis numbering 14 were only
one above the previous year.

The general downward trend of new cases occurring annually since the end of the war is shown by the following table:-

In the school health service B.C.G. vaccination was offered to
all children in their fourteenth year and, as a result of this,
444 children were vaccinated.
The Walthamstow and Chingford Association of Tuberculosis Care
Helpers gave assistance wherever possible to patients and their
families who suffered financial loss through the need for prolonged
treatment at home or in hospital. This assistance was mostly in
the form of groceries, fuel, clothing and holidays. The contribution
of £30 which the Chingford Borough Council makes annually to this
Association is very much appreciated.
Dysentery
Fifteen cases of dysentery were notified during the year.
Food Poisonin.;
The two cases reported were found to be due to salmonella
infection.
