Diphtheria
This has been the seventh successive year in which no case of
diphtheria was notified to the health department.
Primary and secondary immunisation against this disease was
carried out to the following extent in children under 15 years of age:-
Primary immunisations - under 5 years - 520
" " - 5 to 15 years - 30
Total - 550
Number receiving secondary or
reinforcing injections - 229
Scarlet Fever
This disease was of a mild character in all the 54 cases that
occurred in the Borough.
The following table indicates the cases notified during the past
five years and the percentage of cases removed to hospital

Measles
Measles was the most prevalent of the infectious conditions with a
total of 870 cases, the highest number since 1952. Six of the cases
only were admitted to hospital; there was, unfortunately, one death.
Whooping Cough
The incidence of this condition was very low - 52 cases only being
notified.
The number of children who received a full course of immunisation
against this disease during 1957 was 26l.
