29.
The Public Analysts drew attention to the need for a
revision of the standard laid down by the Ministry of Agriculture,
Fisheries and Food in relation to orange drink. The analysis
of one sample showed that the drink contained a little less
fruit than is normally in drinks of this nature, but nevertheless
the Analysts felt it had in all probability been prepared in
accordance with the Ministry's specification.
One sample which created interest was that of a tinned fish
and meat Preparation which was primarily sold for feeding cats.
The reason for submitting this sample for examination was that it
had come to the notice of the Department that this preparation
was being consumed by immigrants, and the question naturally
arose as to whether or not the product was fit for human
consumption. An exhaustive examination, both bacteriologically
and chemically showed that the preparation was sterile and free
from any harmful contamination.
