BACTERIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL EXAMINATION
OF FOOD.
Bacteriological Examinations.
The Counties Public Health Laboratories, 66, Victoria
Street, London, S.W.I, undertake bacteriological examinations
for the Councii, through the Essex County Council Bacteriological
Laboratory Service.
During the year 39 samples were forwarded to the Laboratories
for bacteriological examination, 35 being samples of ice
cream and four samples of Swimming Pool water.
Ice Cream. The results of the ice cream are summarised
below, and it will be noted that the presence of bacteria coli
was detected in one sample only. The classification of the
samples in relation to the Ministry's Provisional Grading is as
follows:—
Grade I. Grade II. Grade III. Grade IV

One sample not graded owing to colouring.
One sample fruit lolly not graded.
The samples in the following table which were adversely
reported on by the Bacteriologist gave rise to further investigations
by the Department, and letters were forwarded to dealers and manufacturers.

Where the source of manufacture was outside the area of the Borough due notice of the defaulting sample was forwarded to the authority controlling the manufacture.
