Social Conditions
Chingford is mainly a residential area and most of the
inhabitants earn their living outside the district. Amongst the
principal industries must be included the building trades, two
large laundries and a firm of hosiery makers, these last three
employing mainly female labour. There are, in addition, several
factories making cork goods, plywood, electric lamps, cabinets
and cardboard boxes.
During the last year or so the construction of the Metropolitan
Water Board's new reservoir in the Lea Valley has
absorbed an appreciable amount of local labour.
There is relatively very little employment in the district.
