Population.
The Registrar.General's estimate of population for the mid.year 1948 was
106,700, and this has been adopted for the calculation of the statistics in this
report.

The live births registered in the borough in 1948 numbered 1,692, giving a birth rate of 15.86 per 1,000 of the population (England and Wales 17.9). The births were made up as follows :-
