Care of Mothers during Confinement.
The Corporation had no maternity home and had no formal agreement
with any hospital for the reception of difficult or complicated cases. These
are referred to the West Middlesex County Hospital.
Home Help Service.
On the 4th July, 1948, there were 10 full.time and 20 part.time home
helps on the staff.
Gas and Air Analgesia.
All the Corporation municipal midwives were qualified to administer gas
and air analgesia. Analgesia was administered to 98 patients during the
period. The three midwives who had cars carried the apparatus with them.
Two other machines were kept at the Hollies Ambulance Depot for use by
the remaining midwives.

Post.natal Care.

Post.natal care was carried out at the ante.natal clinics and mothers urged to attend. The numbers were as follows:-

One maternal death occurred during the period 1st January, 1948, to
4th July, 1948.
Birth Control and Gynaecological Cases.
No birth control clinic was held in the borough, but arrangements existed
with the birth control clinics at Richmond and Hounslow for mothers on
medical recommendation to receive advice on "family spacing" and
gynaecological complaints. In neccessitous cases the Corporation undertook
responsibility for payment for consultations and applicances.
Hostel Accommodation.
During the period under review 3 patients were admitted to 16, The Park,
Golders Green, for their confinements, and 5 to the post.natal home at Hendon.
The cost of these arrangements was borne by the Corporation, the contribution
payable by the patient being assessed according to the Council's scale of
assistance.
