INFANTILE MORTALITY
There were 74 deaths of infants under one year during the
year giving an infantile mortality rate of 48.02 per 1,000 live
births. Although this shows an increase on the figure of 37.1 for
1944, it compares favourably with the rate for England and Wales In
1945, which was 46.
An analysis of the mortality reveals that neo-natal deaths were responsible for 66.2 per cent of the total deaths, viz:-

Congenital malformations, premature birth, etc. caused 47
(or 60.35%) of the total infant deaths.
Deaths of illegitimate infants.
The death rate of illegitimate infants during 1945 was
62,5 per 1,000, compared with 43.48 for the previous year. The
corresponding death-rate of legitimate children was 46.5 (36.5 for
1944)
