The population as estimated by the Registrar General for the middle of
the year 1938 was 96,550, representing an increase of 2,320 compared with

of 1,882 persons.

This gives a birth rate of 14.4 per 1,000 of the population as compared
with 15.1 for England and Wales.
Deaths.
The nett deaths registered in the borough during 1938 numbered 957,
and were made up as follows : males, 487; females, 470.
The crude death rate per 1,000 of the population for the year was 9.91.
By the use of the Registrar General's comparability factor, an adjusted death
rate of 9.81 is obtained. This shows a decrease compared with last year,
and is well below the comparable death rate (11.6) for England and Wales.

An analysis of the death returns reveals that the main causes of death
