SANITARY INSPECTION OF THE AREA
The Chief Public Health Inspector reports as follows:
Housing Act, 1957
In reporting upon the work performed by the Public Health
Department during the year 1958, attention must be drawn to the
continued activity in the field of housing. It will be noted that a number
of individual houses were reported upon and dealt with by the
Public Health Committee and two areas were represented by the
Medical Officer of Health as Clearance areas. Further, reports were
made upon the condition of a number of basement dwellings and it
will be seen from the following details that these dwellings were dealt
with in accordance with the provisions of the Housing Act.
Referring to the Report of the Medical Officer of Health, 1957, Nos.
2, 4, and 6 Albert Road were considered further by the Committee and
the owners, the latter finally coming to the conclusion that the cost
of putting the houses into good habitable condition was more than
they were prepared to spend. They eventually agreed to a Demolition
Order being made against each house, which was done in accordance
with the Act.
Reference was made to properties in Belgrave Terrace being removed
from the Council's list of sub-standard dwellings. It can now
be reported that two of the houses were converted into one and reconditioned
by the owner/occupier of one who purchased the adjoining
property in order to achieve this improvement.
Three houses, 8, Woodbine Place. 45, Horn Lane and 55, Globe
Road were reported to the Council as being unfit to repair at reasonable
expense. These properties were considered in conjunction with
their neighbours, being in all cases semi-detached pairs. Subsequently
Demolition Orders were made on 8 and 9. Woodbine Place, 43 and
45, Horn Lane and 55 and 57 Globe Road. The owners gave much
thought to the repair of 43 Horn Lane and 57 Globe Road, but finally
informed the Council that the necessary work to render them fit for
habitation would be too costly.
The future of Nos. 15, Victoria Road and 7 and 9 Voluntary Place
was carefully considered bv the owners who submitted schedules
of repairs and improvements but because of the high cost involved
in executing the necessary works Demolition Orders were enforced
in all three cases.
Below is given a list of properties dealt with during the year together
with brief remarks where appropriate.

of the house and when inspected it was found to be suitable
