(b) Salvage
Collection and sale of salvage has continued, but owing to the uncertainty
of the market at the present time scrap metal was not collected
from October onwards.
Sewerage
No major sewerage works were undertaken or commenced during
the year but minor improvements continued, including the provision
of further manholes where such facilities are lacking.
Sewage Works
(a) Eastern. Tenders were obtained for Stage I of the improvement
scheme mentioned in last years report and work commenced
at the beginning of September. Although some delay occurred due to
bad weather in the winter months, it is anticipated that this stage of the
scheme will be completed in the early summer of 1959. It will then
be necessary for a period to elapse in order that the results of the
work may be fully assessed before proceeding with the possible
second stage of the improvement works, which may include microstraining
plant, in order that the effluent passing to the river may be
improved to the standard required by the River Board.
(b) Southern. Preparation of the detailed scheme for Stage I of the
reconstruction and improvement of these works, was nearly completed
by the end of 1958 and it was anticipated that the actual work would
start in the ensuing spring.
Originally, this first stage mainly included storm over-flows, detritus
removal, screens, recorder, 2 clariflocculators, 3 humus tanks and all
necessary pipe-lines and ancillary works. However in view of the
Ministry of Housing and Local Government Circular requesting
Local Authorities to bring forward Capital Works for early execution
where possible, the very critical prevailing sludge drying facilities at
the works and the importance attached to adequate final treatment
in humus tanks, it was decided to bring forward from the second
stage part of the new sludge drying beds and the fourth humus tank.
These additional items in the first stage were incorporated in the
detailed scheme being prepared and it is anticipated that tenders will
be obtained early in financial year 1959/60.
