SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICE:
The following extracts from the Annual Report of the School
Medical Officer for the West Essex Division are of interest:-
"I am again pleased to report that the health of schoolchildren
in West Essex remains at a very satisfactory level. The number of
children discovered to have defects which are not already under
observation or treatment continues to decline, and the need for a
more selective approach on the part of the School Health Service is
becoming increasingly apparent.
In view of the improved medical staffing situation an increased
number of children were examined during the year, and in 12% of
cases pupils were found to have defects requiring or under treatment.
Cleanliness Surveys:
8,655 inspections were carried out during the year, infestation
being discovered in only 15 cases (0.18%). This figure represents
a further decrease from the numbers recorded in the past 2 years.
Enuresis:
The problem of enuresis or bed-wetting is usually indicative
of a degree of emotional disturbance, although physical causes are
occasionally found. Children showing evidence of severe emotional
