School Dental Service:
The favourable results of the improvement in the staffing
position, which occurred in 1962 have been maintained ever since.
Over this period the number of teeth filled has increased
while the number extracted because of caries has decreased, so
that now 39 permanent teeth are being saved for every one removed
on account of dental decay. This is nearly twice as many as in
1961. The corresponding figure for temporary teeth is 3.5
saved to 1 extracted and, although this figure is also twice that
for 1961, there is obviously room for further improvement. A
major difficulty is that many of these teeth are already badly
decayed by the time children start school and so come under the
care of the School Dental Service. It is felt that this
position could be helped by further efforts to bring home to
the mothers of these pre-school children the need to take them
for regular four-monthly examination to clinics or general
