Recuperative Holidays:
13 pupils were reconmended for a recuperative holiday during
the year, this being a slight reduction compared with 1963. In
the majority of cases the services of the National Sunday School
Union are utilised, the maximum co-operation being afforded by
that Society regarding vacancies in their Bournemouth home.
Enuresis:
Enuresis Alarms were loaned to 67 children following
recommendation from hospital consultants, general practitioners
and School Medical Officers.
Whilst it is difficult to draw conclusions from statistics
relating to this type of treatment, it does appear that the
measure of success rarely falls below 50%, and in only 7 cases
was it felt necessary to re-issue an alarm to pupils who suffered
a relapse.
Health Education:
The campaign in relation to "Smoking and Health" has
continued by means of the distribution of posters for display
in schools supported by a visit of the Mobile Unit to 6
Secondary Schools when the film "The Smoking Machine" was shown.
Various Junior Schools were visited to screen the film entitled
"Smoking and You" with a School Medical Officer in attendance
to elaborate on the theme with a talk, and to hold an "Any
Questions" forum. Some appreciative letters were received
from pupils of the 9/11 years age group, the contents underlining
the interest engendered by this type of presentation. It is
felt that the best results would be achieved by a programme
involving visits to Junior and Secondary Schools every 2 years;
in this way the impact made on the 9+ age group could be boosted
when they first attended a Secondary School, and so combat any
temptation to try the smoking habit.
The attention of Head Teachers was also drawn to a pamphlet
entitled "Towards Maturity" which is published by the Central
Council for Health Education.
A request from a County High School for a talk by a School
Medical Officer to 5th and 6th formers was met by arranging
separate days for the boys and girls, the talks being followed
by questions.
Girls in attendance at Secondary Schools continued to
have lectures supported by the showing of the film "The Story
of Menstruation"; visits to clinics and hospitals also being
arranged. Talks on personal hygiene were also given at Junior
Schools.
