Premises served by earth, chemical closets and cesspools are
in areas where no sewer is available.
Every opportunity is made to connect premises to the sewer
as opportunity offers and several schemes are in hand with
this in view.
(ii) Public Cleansing.
Collection of house refuse once weekly throughout the district
has been continued during the year, by the Council's own
covered vehicles and manual staff. The service has required the
full-time use of five 10/12 cubic yard "Fordson" lorries with
"Eagle" tipping bodies and a substantial part of the time of a
similar vehicle of 7 cubic yard capacity, particularly to deal
with an increasing number of schools and special collections.
Trade refuse has been collected on a scale of charges related
to quantity and this service has continued to prove acceptable
and used by many local traders.
Refuse has been disposed of by controlled tipping at a tip
rented from a local contractor. A bulldozer is used for levelling
and compacting and for prompt application of covering material.
Measures have been taken as and when necessary against
fly and vermin infestation.
