Infantile Mortality.

As we have no information transmitted to us with regard to some of the births which occur outside the district, and are subsequently transferred in, it is not possible with absolute accuracy to work out the comparative rates of infant mortality for each ward in the Borough, but as far as this is possible with the figures available, and they may be taken as a fairly reliable indication, the numbers of infant deaths and the rates per thousand of the births occuring within the various wards are appended.

The rate for the District as a whole was 39.78.

The figure obtained under this heading is regarded as a valuable index of the sanitary
conditions of a district. Furthermore, as it is based on definite figures (i.e., the actual number
of births and infant deaths), it is more reliable than the death-rate, which is calculated on an
estimated population.
The rate for 1937 is 39.78 per 1,000 births, which is the record figure for this district.
Last year's figure was 48.25, and our previous record figure was 40.77 in 1935. Some comparative
rates are shown on page 14.
