1930 Both ears discharging intermittently—left ear, deep sinus in bone behind Pinna.
Attended Clinic daily for cleansing treatment according to instruction of surgeon
in London, whom she saw periodically. Began school again. Had considerable
pain left ear from time to time, and was absent from school periodically. Child
very run down.
1931 In-patient local hospital for 9 weeks. On leaving hospital both ears discharging.
Treated daily at Clinic as above. June-November, Convalescent treatment at
seaside.
1932 Left Sinus continues to discharge, right ear intermittent discharge—again treated
at Clinic for cleansing and seeing Surgeon in London periodically. Returned to
school half-days, but later was re-excluded on account of pain and poor general
condition.
In April her mother was unable to continue to attend the hospital in
London on account of the cost of fares, and the child then came directly under
the care of the Clinic, and treatment with B.I.P.P. was started. Her condition
at this time was—left ear, deep sinus with profuse evil smelling discharge—considerable
pains at intervals. Right ear—intermittent slight discharge. General
condition of child very poor. Treatment previously had been cleansing three
times daily with Hydrogen Peroxide—this was usually done each morning at the
Clinic with the mother carrying out the other cleansings.
On 19.4.32 the left sinus was well cleansed and B.I.P.P. applied
as thoroughly as possible and lightly plugged with wool with no treatment at home.
20.4.32. No discharge, no pain and no smell.
21.4.32. Slight discharge—more B.I.P.P. applied.
22.4.32. No discharge.
23.4.32. No discharge and more B.I.P.P. added.
25.4.32. No discharge.
26.4.32. No discharge, moist-—B.I.P.P.
27.4.32. No discharge.
28.4.32. No discharge—B.I.P.P.
3.5.32. Pain left ear, no discharge, fomented. Foments continued for 6 days
and no fresh B.I.P.P. added—very slight discharge.
10.5.32. Sinus dry, no pain—appears to be healing from bottom.
31.5.32. Returned to school in afternoon. Was seen several times weekly and
B.I.P.P. applied when necessary—also to right ear when discharge recommenced.
By the end of June was being seen twice weekly and
B.I.P.P. applied when necessary—sinus from time to time showed
slight discharge but looked healthier, and was very slowly filling in.
General condition very much improved.
From 24.8.32. Able to attend school all day and Clinic twice weekly—
occasional discharge from left sinus and from right ear. B.I.P.P. used
when necessary.
In October, 1932, this child showed signs of Abdominal Tuberculosis,
and her general condition became worse. In December she was
sent away to the Royal Sea Bathing Home, Margate.
In spite of this illness the left sinus continued to remain satisfactory—only
occasional and slight discharge—treated weekly with
B.I.P.P. during last 6 weeks, and although the sinus was still deep it
was smaller than at the commencement of treatment with B.I.P.P.
E.C. (21.12.19).
Attended Clinic February, 1928, with discharge after Left Mastoidectomy. Has continued
under treatment more or less daily until B.I.P.P. was started in November, 1932. On
occasions during that time the condition has cleared, but without regular supervision discharge
has always recurred. Different kinds of treatment had been tried, but the condition
did not clear permanently. General condition has remained good throughout. Since B.I.P.P.
was started, the girl has been seen only once a week, with no treatment at home. Actually
it was only necessary to give two applications of B.I.P.P. to the end of the year—-with the
ear remaining clean and sweet, although the condition has not permanently cleared.
J.W. (24.6.23).
Old standing case of Left Otorrhœa—general condition very poor. Had 12 applications
of B.I.P.P. without appreciable change in the ear condition, the only gain being that
the child was treated once in 3 days instead of three times a day. Went into hospital for general
condition in October.
