INFANTILE MORTALITY.
During 1956 there were 10 deaths among infants under one year,
compared with 11 in 1955 and an average of 15 in the last ten years.
On only one occasion previously has the low figure of 10 infant deaths
been recorded in the Borough. One of the deaths was in respect of an
illegitimate child.
The resultant infant mortality rate for Wimbledon, per thousand
live births, was the lowest on record at 12.40, the lowest rate previously
recorded being 13.60 in 1952. The figure for England and Wales, 23.8,
was also the lowest on record, being IT per thousand below that for
1955, the previous lowest.
Five of the deaths were due to congenital malformations or birth
injuries and one was due to prematurity. Two children died from
pneumonia and one from staphylococcal septicaemia. The remaining
death was due to lack of attention at birth, and may therefore have
been preventable.
The total number of neo.natal deaths (i.e. occurring during the first
four weeks of life) was 7, giving a neo.natal death rate of 8.68 per
thousand live births, as compared with a rate of 16.9 for England and
Wales.
The following table shows the causes of the 10 deaths which
occurred during 1956, together with the age at death.
