RAINFALL
The total rainfall last year was 28.75 inches at the Auckland Road Depot and 28.84 at the
Ferry Lane Station. This was 20 per cent above the average annual rainfall for the area.
One exceptional rainstorm occurred on the 20th July causing widespread flooding throughout
the Borough. Another severe storm took place on 2nd July causing extensive flooding; three
average storms at other times caused moderate flooding and slight flooding occurred on three
further occasions.
SEWERAGE
During the year the following sewerage schemes were completed:-
Cavendish Road Relief Foul Sewer.

Hale End South (Section I) Relief Surface Water Sewer.
Chingford Road Relief Foul Sewer.
Work on the following sewerage schemes was commenced and is now in progress:-
Hale End Road/The Avenue Relief Surface Water Sewer.
West Leyton (Stage III) Main Drainage Scheme.
A tentative 10-year programme of sewer relief works amounting to some £3,000,000 was
approved by the Cleansing, Transport & Works Committee and the present position with regard to
this programme is as follows:-
Buck Walk Foul Sewer Reconstruction- Work in progress.
Piping-in Tufton Road Ditch- Work in progress.
Surface Water Sewer adjoining 95 Sewardstone Road- Contract letawaiting
completion of formalities.
Walthamstow Southern Area- Tender accepted- awaiting loan consent.
Work on the survey and design of schemes for five of the remaining ten areas included in
the above programme is now in progress. In addition seven smaller relief schemes are included in
this years capital programme.
Under the London Government Act 1963 the provision of main sewers and sewage disposal
works became the responsibility of the Greater London Council and the Director of Public Health
Engineering has proposed that several main sewers together with all storm overflows from foul
sewers to streams and the storm tanks at Low Hall Farm and Auckland Road should be vested in
the G.L.C., and the Cleansing, Transport and Works Committee have recommended that no objection
to this be raised. Further main sewers will be considered with a view to vesting at a later date.
