In addition to the main building programme, improvements and
conversions have been carried out in a number of Council owned
properties.
Improvement Grants
In June, 1954, the Council adopted in principle the provisions
of the Housing Act 1949 and the Housing Repairs and Rents Act
1954 in regard to the improvement of housing accommodation, and
consideration of applications for improvement grants began forthwith.
Eighty-four applications were received in 1954, 110 in
1955 and 114 in 1956.
The Borough Architect, Engineer and Surveyor comments as
