NOTIFICATION OF BIRTHS
1,950 births (419 of which belonged to other areas) were
notified during the year under the Public Health Act, 1936.
Notifications were received as follows: Doctors 345; Midwives
1,583; others 22.
Included in the above are 387 births which were notified as
having occurred outside the Borough.
Also included are 29 stillbirths, 7 of which belonged to other
areas. Of the total, 3 occurred outside the Borough.
NEO-NATAL MORTALITY
The neo-natal mortality is the number of infants dying under
one month per 1,000 live births. During 1954, 25 infants died in
the first four weeks of life, a rate of 16.9.
INFANT MORTALITY
The deaths of infants under one year were:—

The death rate of infants under one year of age per 1,000
live births when calculated on the totals given by the Registrar-
General are therefore:—
Legitimate, 21.0; Illegitimate, 1.3; Total 22.3.
Twenty-five infant deaths out of thirty-three were neo-natal
deaths—twenty-three dying within one week of birth.
