Clearance Areas
The survey of dwelling houses in Frederick Street, Grange
Road and Lynmouth Road was completed in January. As a result
of this survey, the Council considered an official representation in
respect of this area in February involving a total of 119 houses.
The Council decided to make a Clearance Area in respect of
these houses and details of the Order were forwarded to the
Ministry of Housing and Local Government for confirmation. As
objections were lodged by some of the owners of the properties, the
Ministry decided to hold a Public Inquiry into the scheme. This
Inquiry had not been held by the end of the year.
The Census of the dwellings carried out immediately prior to
the consideration of the representations by the Health Committee
showed that there were (under the standard of the Housing Act,
1936) 466 equivalent adult units occupying accommodation with a
Permitted Number of 847 units. In other words there was underoccupation
to the extent of 381 units or 45%.
A further survey involving 32 houses in Chingford Lane,
Payzes Cottages, Mill Lane, The Square and Fareys Row was carried
out in the early part of the year. An official representation was
considered by the Council in April in respect of these dwelling
houses.
