ment and it is anticipated that new legislation will be made next
year, giving additional powers to local authorities.
Complaints of smoke nuisance were received and investigations
carried out in respect of 57 business premises.
Verminous Premises.
The number of houses reported to be verminous still remains
comparatively small.
One hundred and thirty-four rooms were disinfested and
insecticides were issued free of charge to tenants of 83 premises.
No notifications were received during the year under the
Hydrogen Cyanide (Fumigation of Buildings) Regulations, 1938.
Swimming Baths and Pools.
The model bye-laws of the Ministry of Health were adopted
in 1938.
(a) Municipal Baths, High Street.-—This is a covered swimming
bath. Mr. W. Cantes kindly contributes the following
report: —
" From January 1st to December 31st, the Baths were open
on 294 days. Number of Swimming Bath bathers during this
period was 124,257.
" Maximum load was on September 7th, when we had
819 bathers.
During this period we also had 123,285 Slipper Bath
bathers."
Sampling was carried out on three occasions, with satisfactory
results.
(b) Whipps Cross Bathing Pool.—This is a large open-air
pool situated in Epping Forest, in the area of the Borough of Leyton
and a few hundred yards from the Walthamstow boundary.
It is administered by a joint Committee representing the two
Boroughs.
The pool is supervised by the Medical Officer of Health for
Leyton, who kindly sends a copy of the analytical findings when
samples are taken.
(c) South-West Essex Technical College.—Sampling was
carried out on three occasions with satisfactory results.
(d) Forest School.—This is a small swimming bath with a
capacity of approximately 65,000 gallons. Sampling was carried
out with satisfactory results.
