"During September one help was accepted for a two
weeks training course for domestic helps at Chelmsford and
was found to be entirely satisfactory in her work. The possibility
of issuing a certificate at a later date is being considered.
"It will be seen from comparative figures that it has been
an extremely busy year and unfortunately during December
there arose a waiting list for help: this need is being dealt
with as quickly as possible.
"Despite many difficulties, 1953 was a year of great consolation
to many sick people and a year of achievement for the
Service."

WELFARE SERVICES
Mr. G. E. Pegram, County Welfare Officer, kindly contributes
the following:—
"The following statistics show the extent to which the
main services provided by the County Welfare Committee
under the National Assistance Act 1948, have been afforded
to persons residing within the Borough of Walthamstow
during the year 1953:—
(1) Residential and Temporary Accommodation.
(a) Admitted to hostels and other residential establishments
: Men, 9; Women, 23.
(b) Admitted to temporary accommodation : Men, 3;
Women, 4; Children, 9.
(2) Blind Persons.
The numbers of registered blind, partially sighted and
defective sighted persons resident in the Borough during the
twelve months ended 31st December, 1953, were as follows:—
