MISCELLANEOUS
1. Old Peoples Welfare.—The Town Clerk, as Honorary
Secretary of the Old People's Welfare Committee, kindly provides
the following :—
"The Walthamstow Old People's Welfare Committee continues
to provide, in conjunction with the statutory and other
agencies, for the welfare of old people and was assisted by a financial
grant made by the Council under Section 31 of the National
Assistance Act 1948.
"Old People's Clubs are provided by the Committee at St.
Luke's Church Room, Greenleaf Road ("Welcome In" Club), St.
Stephen's Church Room, Copeland Road ("Evergreen Club"),
Methodist Church Hall, Gloucester Road ("Valentine Club"),
Winchester Road Methodist Church Hall ("Darby and Joan"
Club). The Committee are actively considering opening other
Clubs particularly in the St. James' Street and Wood Street Areas.
" The Meals-on-Wheels service, started on the 1st April, 1947,
continues to give a much needed service to old people unable to
provide for themselves, midday meals being delivered by the voluntary
workers of the Committee on Monday, Wednesday and Friday
each week. The Council provide two cars and drivers for the use
of the Committee on these days. An average of 65 meals was
delivered on each delivery day, the total for the year being 8,882."
The meals are cooked and packed by the Council's Catering
Department.
2. Funeral Arrangements.—Arrangements were made in regard
to the burials of three persons.
3. Mortuary Provision, etc.—A Coroner's Court, mortuary
(with special provision for infectious disease cases) and a post
mortem room is provided by your Council at Queen's Road
Cemetery.
The Borough Engineer and Surveyor reports that the numbers
of inquests and post mortems were as follows :—
Inquests only 58 ; Post Mortems only 286 ; Post Mortems
and Inquests 46.
4. Conveniences, Public.—During 1951 free washing facilities
continued to be available by the supply of soap and paper towels
at Public Conveniences.
A charge of 2d. continues for the issue of cloth towels.
No charges are made for the use of public conveniences.
