The grounds for admission are:—
(1) First Confinements.
(2) Medical and Obstetrical.
(3) Unsuitable home/social conditions.
VITAL STATISTICS
These are given in Section "A" of this Report. The birth
rate was below that for England and Wales. The infant mortality
rate was 26 against 29 for England and Wales, and the stillbirth
rate 0.30 per 1,000 population as against 0.37. The neo-natal
mortality rate was 20.6 per 1,000 live births.
NOTIFICATION OF BIRTHS
1980 births (303 of which belonged to other areas) were notified
during the year under the Public Health Act, 1936.
Notifications were received as follows: Doctors, 293; Midwives,
1,687.
Included in the above are 290 births which were notified as
having occurred outside the area.
Also included are 51 stillbirths, nine of which belonged to
other areas. Of the total, nine occurred outside the area.
STILLBIRTHS
Stillbirths were 42, yielding a rate per 1,000 population of 0.30.
NEO-NATAL MORTALITY
The neo-natal mortality is the number of infants dying under
one month per 1,000 live births. During 1950, 33 infants died in
the first four weeks of life, yielding a rate of 20.6.
INFANT MORTALITY
The deaths of infants under one year were: —

The death rate of infants under one year of age per 1,000
live births when calculated on the totals given by the Registrar-
Genera'l are therefore :—
