The Borough Architect summarises the general position as
follows:—
"During the calendar years 1946, 1947 and 1948 the
Council have erected a total of 535 temporary houses, rebuilt
29 war-destroyed Council houses and have erected 86 new
houses and 122 flats; 173 war-destroyed houses were rebuilt
by private enterprise and nine new houses erected, giving a
grand total of 934 dwellings."
The official records show that there were 32,000 houses in the
Borough in 1939, 30,000 of which were damaged, including 288
totally destroyed.
(b) Inspection
The following information is supplied in the form required by
the Ministry of Health, and is supplied by the Chief Sanitary
Inspector :—
I.—Inspection of Dwelling-Houses During the Year :—
(1) (a) Total number of dwelling-houses inspected
for housing defects (under the Public Health
or Housing Acts) 3,554
(b) Number of inspections made for the purpose 8,494
(2) (a) Number of dwelling-houses (included under
sub-head (1) above) which were inspected and
recorded under the Housing Consolidated
Regulations, 1925 and 1932 Nil
(b) Number of inspections made for the purpose Nil
(3) Number of dwelling-houses found to be in a state
so dangerous or injurious to health as to be
unfit for human habitation 10
(N.B.—These comprise individual unfit houses)
(4) Number of dwelling-houses (exclusive of those
referred to under the preceding sub-head)
found not to be in all respects reasonably fit
for human habitation 2,271
II.—Remedy of Defects During the Year Without Service
of Formal Notices :—

in consequence of informal action by the Local
