A.—STATISTICS AND SOCIAL CONDITIONS OF THE
AREA.

Population.—The Registrar-General's estimate of the population
at mid-year, 1945, is 103,320, an increase of 2,180 on the previous
figure.
Unemployment.—According to information kindly supplied
by Mr. Percy C. Graham, Manager of the local EmploymentExchange,
the number of insured persons employed in the whole of the area
covered by the Leyton Employment Exchange in July, 1945, was
approximately 45,000. Of these, it is estimated that about 25,000
were employed in Walthamstow. During 1945 the number of
unemployed persons was small, and at no time exceeded 450 for the
whole of the area covered by the Employment Exchange. The
majority of the unemployed persons were placed in employment
within a few days of their registering at the Exchange and there
was a steady demand for both male and female workers throughout
the year.
