Infectious Disease Ambulance Service.—With the termination
of the Civil Defence Organisation it became necessary to provide
telephones at the residences of the drivers. Arrangements were
made with ex-Civil Defence Nursing Auxiliaries for part-time
service as ambulance attendants.
MISCELLANEOUS.
Your Council made the following grants during the year to
voluntary organisations :—
Invalid Children's Aid Association £100
Walthamstow Association of Tuberculosis Care Helpers £25
Mortuary.—A Coroner's Court, mortuary (with special provision
for Infectious Disease cases) and a, post-mortem room is
provided by your Council at Queen's Road Cemetery.
The Cemeter^ Superintendent reports that the number of
inquests and post-mortems were as follows :—
Inquests only 89
Post-mortems 127
Post-mortems and Inquests (not included in above) .. 36
Total 252
Medical Examinations.
During the year, 127 examinations were carried out by the
Medical Staff in respect of the Superannuation and Sick Pay Schemes.
Cremation.
Facilities for cremation are available at the Crematorium
provided by the Corporation of the City of London at Manor Park,
Little Ilford. A conference was held with neighbouring authorities
in regard to the provision of a joint crematorium.
Domestic Help.
Your Council commenced a scheme in accordance with Circular
179/44 on Domestic Help.
Full publicity could not be given to the scheme on account of
the difficulty of recruiting helpers, probably owing to the low rate
of pay (i.e., the Hetherington rate of £2 12s. 6d. per week or Is. 2d.
