136 patients were referred to the Clinics by private doctors.
42 patients were referred to hospitals for treatment.
Municipal Dental Service.
Mr. L. W. Elmer, L.D.S., Senior Dental Surgeon, reports as
follows:—
"This service, commenced in April, 1944, has, I believe,
justified the hopes expressed at the end of 1944 that, with
the return of normal conditions, its scope and usefulness would
greatly expand.
"Treatment is available to inhabitants of the Borough.
The scale of fees is based on the National Health Insurance
Dental Scale. Actual fees charged to patients are reduced
by assessment to persons unable to pay the full fee, while
adolescents under the age of 18 years are charged at a reduced
fee.
' 'In the following report the figures for 1944 are inserted in
brackets.
"379 (143) patients were treated during the year. 2,234
(633) appointments were made and 2,143 (558) were kept.
The approximate nett cost to the Council was only £57.
"1,005 (135) fillings were inserted and 147 (67) scalings,
228 (71) dressings and 1,068 (266) extractions were carried out.
"General anaesthetics were administered on 238 (58)
occasions, local anaesthetics on 112 (54) occasions.
"223 (33) impressions were taken, 97 (24) bites and 106
(23) 'try-ins'.
