NOTIFICATION OF BIRTHS.
1,659 births (70 of which belonged to other areas) were
notified during the year under the Public Health Act, 1936.
Notifications were received as follows:- Doctors and
parents, 248; Midwives, 1,411.
Included in the above are 167 births which were notified
as having occurred outside the Borough.
Also included are 50 stillbirths, 3 of which did not belong
to the area. 19 were notified by doctors and 31 by midwives.
Of the total, 12 occurred outside the area. '

The Reistrar-General's returns show the following registrations during the calendar year:-

Of the 1515 registrations received in the Department
between 28th.December 1941 and 2nd. January 1943, a total of
10 were not notified in this area, but some may possibly have
been notified elsewhere. Appropriate action was taken when
necessary.
Of the 1515 local registrations, 105 belonging to other
areas are excluded, leaving a nett total of 141C.
ISSUE OF PRE-NATAL- CLOTHING COUPONS
During the year 1,922 expectant mothers were issued with
coupons. The information available by virtue of the
applications was fully utilised by the Health Visitors
VITAMINS.
With effect from February 2nd. 1942, in addition to the
facilities previously existing for the issue of Cod Liver Oil
and Fruit Juices,to infants under 2 years of age, the Ministry
of Food made those preparations available to all children
aged up to 6 years.
Vitamins were distributed at all the Welfare Centres, at
the Town Hall, and at the Food Office.
DAY NURSERIES.
A nursery accommodating 60 children of all ages up to 5 years
was opened on April 1st. 1942 in leased premises adjoining
the St.Mary's Convent.
Two further nurseries, each of 50 children, in prefabricated
huts were projected at the end of the year.
The nursery for 25 children attached to the welfare Centre
at Brookscroft was continued during the year and was recognised
by the Ministry of Health for grant.
A Nursery School for 25 children provided at The Friends' Hall
was also available.
