Staff.— No change from previous report except that the
following members of the Staff were called up for service with the
Armed Forces :—
Miss M. McCallum, S.R.N. (Senior Chiropodist), R.A.F.
Nursing Service.
Mr. F. Northcote, A.R.S.I. (Sanitary Inspector). (Later
released.)

AREA.

Population (Registrar-General's Estimate, mid-year 1939) 130,000

Population.— The Registrar-General's estimate of the population
at mid-year, 1939, is 130,000, a decrease of 800 on the previous
figure.
Extracts from Vital Statistics.— The Registrar-General's
mid-year 1939 population (viz., 130,000) has been supplied for the
purpose of calculating Birth rates only, but for the purpose of
calculating Death rates and the incidence of notifiable diseases a
separate figure of 123,900 has been provided. Similarly, two sets
of figures with respect to live births have been supplied, (a) 1,606
for the calculation of the Birth rate per 1,000 estimated population
(130,000) and, (b) 1,540 for the purpose of calculating Infant and
Maternal Mortality rates.

The explanation of the separate figures is due to temporary movement of residents owing to war conditions.
