TO THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE
PUBLIC HEALTH COMMITTEE.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I beg to submit, herewith, my report as Medical Officer of
Health for the year 1939. On the instructions of the Ministry of
Health the report has been curtailed as far as possible.
The large amount of time and energy which has been given to
the organisation of the Casualty Service in connection with Civil
Defence was amply repaid by its smooth operation at the outbreak
of War. As far as possible the Public Health Services were continued
unaltered after the declaration of War.
Mercifully, the incidence of serious infectious disease during
the first months of War remained low.
I gratefully acknowledge your help and consideration and the
good work of the Staff of the Department.
I have the honour to be,
Your obedient servant.
A. T. W. POWELL,
Medical Officer of Health.
