As for 1938, with the addition of Miss F. Donovan, S.R.N.,
S.C.M., H.V. Cert., appointed 14th June, 1939, for Health Visiting
and supervision of Out Workers.
NOTIFICATION OF BIRTHS.
1,678 births (158 of which belonged to other areas) were notified
during the year under the Public Health Act, 1936. Notifications
were received as follows :—doctors and parents, 323; midwives,
1,365.
Included in the above are 244 births which were notified as
having occurred outside the Borough.
Also included are 52 stillbirths, 4 of which did not belong to the
area. 17 were notified by doctors and 35 by midwives. Of the total,
seven occurred outside the area.
The stillbirth rate per 1,000 population was 0.40.
REGISTRATION OF BIRTHS.
The Registrar-General's returns show the following registrations during the calendar year:—

Of the 1,455 birth registrations received in the Department
between 7th January, 1939, and 30th December, 1939, a total of 22
were not notified in this area, but some may possibly have been notified
elsewhere. Appropriate action was taken when necessary.
Of the 1,455 local registrations, 204 belonging to other areas
are excluded, leaving a nett total of 1,251.
The local registrations for 1939 were 104 less than in 1938.
