TO THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE MATERNITY
AND CHILD WELFARE COMMITTEE.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I beg to present herewith a report on the Maternity and Child
Welfare Services in your Borough for the year 1939.
The year is notable for the lowest Infantile Mortality rate ever
recorded in Walthamstow, viz., 29, the previous lowest being 37 in
1935, and a new low record in the Maternal Mortality rate, viz.,
1.29.
The Services were maintained as fully as possible during the
year and in spite of four months of war, the work done at Thorpe
Coombe and at clinics was almost up to that of previous years.
Again I have to acknowledge the help of your Chairman and
the good work of the Staff.
I have the honour to be,
Your obedient Servant,
A. T. W. POWELL,
Medical Officer of Health.
