The total number of Diphtheria specimens examined in 1938
was 1,771.
Direct examinations were done on 54 Diphtheria specimens, and
7 were positive; 3 were positive on culture, although negative on
direct examination.
In addition, 156 specimens of urine were examined, as compared
with 163 in 1938.
A total of 1,565 tubes of culture media were made by Mr. West
and of these, 636 were sent to the Sanatorium.
ESSEX COUNTY COUNCIL SCHEME.
The Essex County Council also provides facilities for examination
of pathological specimens, and the County Medical Officer states
that 1,997 specimens were examined for local practitioners during
1939, as follows:—
Diphtheria swabs, 146; Sputa, 759; Typhoid specimens, 28;
Ringworm specimens, 7; Miscellaneous, 1,055; Diphtheria. Virulence
Tests, 2.

VACCINATION.

Mr. E. Sharp, Vaccination Officer for the Area, has furnished the following return for 1939:—

In addition to the above, 11 primary vaccinations were
recorded, and 18 re-vaccinations.
During! 1939 the vaccinal condition of all school children
examined at Routine Medical Inspection was recorded, and a. summary
of the findings for the year showed that 22.4 per cent. were
vaccinated.
Infectious Diseases notified by the Medical Staff.—Scarlet
Fever, 10; Diphtheria, 7; Dysentery, 6; Total, 23.
G.—INFECTIOUS DISEASES HOSPITAL.
Renovations, etc.—Various works of renovation and maintenance
were carried out during 1939.
