Follow-up of Double Dose A.P.T. Immunisation for Schick
Test.—531 children were sent for and 271 responded. Of these 18
gave a positive result or 6.6 per cent. had lost some of their
immunity and were given another dose.
Diphtheria in, Immunised Children.—One case occurred, the
patient, a boy of 6 years, was admitted to the Isolation Hospital
with a bad throat which, though clinically resembled diphtheria,
was thought to be mainly due to Vincent's Angina. The bacteriological
result of the swab taken was "K.L.B. virulent and of the
intermediate type, also organisms of Vincent's Angina were found."
The boy made a good recovery, which would probably not have been
so had he not been immunised and therefore had a certain amount
of protection.
First Birthday Letters.—1,564 letters were sent to the parents
of all children following their first birthday, advising them to have
their infants protected against diphtheria. 156 children were
brought and protected and 20 others were immunised by private
practitioners.
Immunisation by General Practitioners.—Diphtheria prophylactic
is available to general practitioners. During 1939, 22'c.c's
of alum precipitated toxoid were issued. This quantity is
sufficient to protect 22 children.
Scarlet Fever Immunisation.—There were no Dick tests for
scarlet fever during 1939.
