NOTIFICATION OF BIRTHS.
1,898 births (205 of which belonged to other areas) were notified
during the year under the Public Health Act, 1936. Notifications
were received as follows:— doctors and parents, 358; midwives,
1,540.
Included in the above are 227 births which were notified as
having occurred outside the Borough.
Also included are 72 stillbirths 6 of which did not belong to
the area. 11 were notified by doctors and 61 by midwives. Of the
total, seven occurred outside the area.
The stillbirth rate per 1,000 population was 0.53.

The Registrar-General's returns show the following registrations during the calendar year:—

Of the 1,617 birth registrations received in the Department
between 2nd January, 1938, and 1st January, 1939, a total of 79
were not notified in this area, but some may possibly have been
notified elsewhere. Appropriate action was taken when necessary.
Of the 1,617 local registrations, 262 belonging to other areas
are excluded, leaving a nett total of 1,355, which are allocated to
the wards as follows:—
