Staff.—The staff remained the same as detailed in previous
Reports.
The following examination results were obtained by probationers

Final Examination 6 passed at first attempt.
„ „ 2 passed at second attempt.
Preliminary Examination 4 passed; 2 failed.
Educational Test 3 passed; 2 failed.
General.—(i) The death rate per 100 admissions of infectious
disease patients was 0.62 and per 100 total admissions 0.97.
(ii) During the year the County Council continued the amount of
the grant payable by them in respect of infectious disease beds.
The grant was made up as follows:—
£
(1) £5 per bed on a basis of 2,000 cubic feet per
bed (i.e., 81 beds) 405
(2) £10 per ambulance 20
Total £425
(iii) The County Council has formulated a scheme for Isolation
Hospital accommodation in the County, which provides for a Joint
Hospital of 261 beds to serve the Boroughs of Walthamstow and
Leyton. An agreement has been drawn up and a Joint Hospital
Committee is now dealing with the necessary extensions.
(iv) Your Committee instructed that a 48-hour week was to be
operated in regard to all Staff.
(v) Reciprocal arrangements were entered into with the
Waltham Joint Hospital Board for the treatment of infectious
disease cases.

(vi) The following table shows the admissions, discharges and deaths during 1938:—
