NOTIFICATION OF BIRTHS.
1,826 births (189 of which belonged to other areas) were notified
during the year under the Notification of Births Acts, 1907 and
1915, and the Public Health Act, 1936. Notifications were received
as follows:—doctors and parents, 428: midwives, 1,398.
Included in the above are 205 births which were notified as
having occurred outside the Borough.
Also included are 55 stillbirths, 6 of which did not belong to
the area- 15 were notified by doctors and 40 by midwives. Of the
total, eleven occurred outside the area.
The stillbirth rate per 1,000 population was 0.45.

Of the 1,691 birth registrations received in the Department
between 2nd January, 1937, and 1st January, 1938, a total of 156
were not notified in this area, but some may possibly have been
notified elsewhere, especially in view of the fact that of the 1,691
registrations, 242 referred to births which belonged to other areas.
Of the 1,691 local registrations, 242 are excluded, leaving a net
total of 1,449, which are allocated to the wards as follows:—
