TO THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE
PUBLIC HEALTH COMMITTEE.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I beg to present herewith a report on the work of the Department
during 1936, arranged in the form suggested by the Ministry of
Health.
Maternal and Child Welfare has been dealt with in a separate
section.
The adjusted death rate of 10.8 per 1,000 resident population
compares favourably with that of 12.1 for England and Wales. The
incidence of Diphtheria appears to be the lowest recorded, whilst the
number protected was the highest. Diphtheria notifications were
only 0.77 per 1,000 population against 1.39 for England and Wales.
Attendances at the Foot Clinic and the Women's Clinic again
increased.
A great deal of additional work followed from the operation of
the Housing Act, 1935.
Your Engineer and Surveyor, Housing Manager, Cleansing
Superintendent and the Superintendent of the Ambulance Service
have again kindly contributed reports on matters dealt with by their
Departments.
The Chief Sanitary Inspector has given every assistance and has
contributed those sections of the report dealing with the work of the
Sanitary Inspectorate.
The staff of the Department have worked well and have assisted
in the compilation of the report.
I have to acknowledge the consideration and help received from
your Committee and from your Chairman.
I have the honour to be,
Your obedient Servant,
A. T. W. POWELL,
Medical Officer of Health.
