B. WALTHAMSTOW CHILD WELFARE SOCIETY.
The Society came of age during 1935, having been founded
by the late Dr. Elliott in 1914—four years before the operation
of the Maternity and Child Welfare Act. The Headquarters
are at "Brookscroft," Forest Road, one of the few remaining
old mansions of Walthamstow, and which has been adapted to
suit its present function. A large and well-planned annexe
has been built for massage and artificial sunlight treatment.
The original house contains waiting, weighing and consultation
rooms on the ground floor, three wards with seven cots
for the in-patient treatment of infants on the second floor,
and staff quarters above. The grounds are both extensive and
attractive, and the property has been made available to the
Society by the generosity of the late Sir William Mallinson,
Bart., who continued to be a generous benefactor until his
death.
The objects of the Society are the physical and moral
welfare of infants and children up to five years of age; and
the training of children's nurses. Systematic lectures for the
voluntary works and trainees are given.
Mrs. Maud Cross has acted as Honorary Secretary since
the inception of the Society, has given unstinted service and
has, throughout, inspired the work. The number of voluntary
workers on the active list is about sixty, and many have given
unbroken service from the beginning—a wonderful record!
The Medical and Nursing Staff consists of Dr. Forbes
Buchan (Physician and Lecturer), Dr. W. Cuthbertson
(Assistant Physician), Miss Hughes, S.C.M. (Superintendent
and Health Visitor), Miss Morley, S.R.N., S.C.M. (Matron),
Miss Dockree, S.R.N., S.C.M. (Sister), and Miss Latimer,
S.R.N., S.C.M., and three probationers.
Clinics are held as follows:—
Tuesday and Friday, 2-4 p.m. Massage and Sunlight
Treatment.
Wednesday, 2.0-4.30 p.m. Weighing Clinic and
Dispensary Treatment.
Thursday, 1.30-6 p.m. Infant Consultations.
