Dr. Sheppard reports as follows:—
"1935 has been a very successful year at the Welfare
Centres. Six Welfare Sessions are held weekly, and at all
but one there is a doctor in attendance.
"The ante-natal clinic has been kept busy for the
past twelve months. The Midwives of the district have taken
advantage of this clinic better than in previous years.
"The number of applications for 'Home Helps' during
the year has greatly increased. This is very gratifying as
it shows that the expectant mothers are becoming more
aware of the facilities offered by the Council, and are taking
advantage of them.
"The co-operation between the school clinics and the
child welfare centres continues to be satisfactory. Dr. Friel
had a large attendance of babies at his clinics for ear troubles.
A number of children suffering from eye defects, including
strabismus, were seen at the eye clinics. Many children under
five years of age obtained treatment from the "dental surgeons.
"The mothers attending the ante-natal clinic are each
year becoming more amenable to dental treatment. Now
any mother who sees the dental surgeon before the sixth
month of pregnancy, and is found to require dentures, can
lave assistance in obtaining them. This is a great inducement
for early treatment.
"Mr. Whitchurch Howell saw a large number of children
under school age at the Orthopaedic Clinic. Unfortunately,
most of these cases were suffering from defects due to rickets.
Miss Hill, as usual, attends each welfare centre during the
week to give massage treatment to the children of that
district. Her five weekly sessions are all well attended, and
the results she obtains are very satisfactory, and in many
cases she has prevented her little patient from having to
attend the Orthopaedic Clinic later.
"The Council's thanks are again due to the voluntary
workers at the centres, who have given faithful service during
at the year, and have been very helpful to the Health Visitors."
The attendances at the various Welfare Centres can be
seen from the following table:—
