The death-rates of infants under one year of age per
1,000 live births when calculated on the totals given by the
Registrar-General are therefore :—
Legitimate, 37; Illegitimate, 45. Total, 37.
The rate of 37 creates a new low record for the Borough,
the previous lowest rate being 39 in 1930.
The provisional return of the Registrar-General for 1935
shows that there are only two lower rates in the whole of
Greater London, viz., Beckenham (32) and Wembley (34).
The Infant Mortality Rate for other areas during 1935
was as follows :—
England and Wales 57
121 County Boroughs and Great Towns
(including London) 62
140 Smaller Towns (25,000 to 50,000) 55
London 58
Neo-Natal Mortality.
The neo-natal mortality is the number of deaths of
infants under one month per 1,000 live births. During 1935,
36 infants died in the first four weeks of life, yielding a rate
of 21.5.
For the last ten years in England and Wales the neonatal
deaths have been approximately one-half of the total
deaths under one year of age.

Reduction in the rate can only be expected from intensive
and skilled ante-natal care.
The following table shows the causes of death of children
under one year of age during 1935:—
