TO THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE
MATERNITY AND CHILD WELFARE COMMITTEE.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
The following report on the work done in 1935 in respect
of Maternal and Child Welfare is presented for your consideration.
Once more the work performed shows an increase in
volume and, I trust, in usefulness. The year is notable for
the establishment of a new low record in infant mortality
(37 per 1,000), for increased ante-natal and welfare attendances
and home visits, and for increasing use of the home help
scheme.
The work done at the Maternity Home continued to
increase until capacity was reached in August, 1935, when
bookings were restricted. Draft plans for future extensions
have already been approved in general principle. A very full
clinical report on the work of the Home has been compiled
by the Resident Medical Officer.
The staff responsible for maternal and child welfare
service—official and voluntary—have worked unremittingly.
I would again record my appreciation of your Committee's
help and consideration.
I have the honour to be,
Your obedient Servant,
A. T. W. POWELL,
Medical Officer of Health.
