TO THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS' OF THE
PUBLIC HEALTH COMMITTEE.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I beg to present herewith a report on the work of the
Public Health Department for the year 1935. It is arranged
in the form suggested by the Ministry of Health.
The year under review covered an increasing amount of
work. Reference must be made to the favourable vital
statistics for the Borough, the decrease in infectious disease,
the increase in diphtheria immunisation, and the expansion
of services at the Women's Clinic.
The work of the Sanitary Section is notable particularly
in respect of the inspection and remedy of housing defects,
and the action taken with regard to caravan areas. A
complete report of the work done in respect of the Housing
Act, 1935, is given, although the survey was mainly carried
out in 1936.
Officers of the Ministry of Health carried out a survey
of the Health Services in the Borough, and the report of the
Ministry is given in full.
Your Engineer and Surveyor, Housing Manager,
Cleansing Superintendent, Superintendent of the Fire Brigade
and Ambulance Service, have again been good enough to
contribute to the report those sections for which they have
been responsible in previous years.
Mr. Duncan, Chief Sanitary Inspector, has again rendered
every help in his power, and has contributed those sections
of the report dealing with the work of the Sanitary Inspectorate.
I would particularly stress his ready assistance in
connection with the Housing Act Survey, and that of Mr.
Rose, Chief Clerk.
The staff of the Department have given good service,
and have assisted in the compilation of the report.
I have again to acknowledge every consideration and
help from your Committee and, in particular, from your
Chairman.
I have the honour to be,
Your obedient Servant,
A. T. W. POWELL,
Medical Officer of Health, etc.
